Concept Crisis and the Virtual Real Worlds
Focussing on IT problems does not solve today's fundamental problem that all system/software design/development suffers. The 'concept crisis' is a major problem with the design and development of all complex systems; at the root is the visualisation of the required capabilities and design of component parts that make up the end solution. If these are not defined, understood, or fail to be communicated, for future re-use, or maintenance, then the project is doomed to eventual failure as stated by the laws and actions of the fabled Ouslem bird.
It is therefore imperative that 3D Metaphors using Virtual Real World technology be created and standardized throughout the Systems Engineering fraternity. Capabilities of a system need to be specified and visualised using 3D Metaphors at concept phase of program management and refined using requirements management techniques in accordance with a standard management framework. These visualisations can then be synthesised into high-level and lower level detailed designs using standard tools like 3D UML.
Standardized technical management must follow international guidelines (ISO 15288) to enable a common world-wide approach to be implemented.
Virtual Real World will enable the capabilities, requirements, and design be represented as 3D metaphors or artefacts with animation, sound, etc., to expressed in a natural and persistent environment. This produces transparency, re-usability, and maintenance, etc. for the designers and users of the system.
