Is Your Home Business Ready for the New Year?
 by: Kit Lum

It's that time of year again when it seems the whole world is on holiday - shopping, celebrating, vacationing, reconnecting with friends and family, or just plain kicking back. On the internet, many people are paying less attention to new business and business opportunities than they are to getting their shopping done.

If you're seeing a slowdown in your business, here are a few smart business moves you can make ahead of the new year:

Plan your advertising. Use that spanking new calendar to chart out your advertising budget and campaigns now. Once you get that out of the way, you'll be ready to get straight down to business after the holidays.

Revisit your business plan. Analyze what's working and what isn't. Add and subtract as you see fit. Finetune your ideas and strategies. Have your plan ready to execute at the word 'go'.

Take advantage of the many year-end advertising specials that are out there. Look for discounted pricing, reserve your advertising spot ahead of the new year and you'll save yourself some ad dollars. For the home business owner, every dollar saved is a dollar earned.

Freshen up your websites and ezines. If you haven't done that in a while, it's time to spruce things up a little. These don't have to be major revamps - just small fixes and updates, and some new things here and there to add a nice new touch. People like to see something new in the new year. It's human nature. It's exciting and it gets them interested to buy.

Do your technical upgrades. Whether it's adding new hardware or test running software, this is a great time to upgrade your PC. Remember upgrading comes with its fair share of teething problems. So use this time to work through those. By the time all these festivities are over, you'll be ready to hit the market and take on the sales with more speed, power and capacity.

Test run a new idea or strategy. The best time to do it is when business is slow. Why? Because if you mess up, it won't be as noticeable or have as disastrous an impact on your business as having it bring things to a grinding halt when your business is in full swing. You'd have time to analyze, fix the problem and retest.

Learn something new. As a netpreneur, it's imperative that you continue to learn and educate yourself. If you're too busy during the year to attend courses or catch up on your business reading, use this time to invest in some personal development.

Write an article. Never had the time? Well, this may be the time you never had to sit down and do some serious writing. Then when January rolls around, you'd be driving some serious traffic to your business.

Polish up your elevator speech. You'll be meeting lots of people over the holidays. Amidst all of that catching up, it's an opportunity to let people know about your business. However, beware of trying to do any hard selling at this time, you don't want to put people off your business forever.

Make your customers feel special. Send them a special holiday greeting or a note of thanks. When the new business year rolls around, you'll be glad you did ;o).

Most importantly, go out there and have yourself a really good time this holiday season. When you're relaxed and feeling good about yourself, you'll be in a better frame of mind to kick your business to a great start in the new year.

Have a fun and safe holiday, everyone!
