How can you add content?
« Posted: October 29, 2007, 11:32:06 AM »

Webmasters have often argued that the path to better search engine visibility lies in generating more and more contents. The argument goes that a website having a big amount of contents will, in the eyes of search engines, be considered as an authority on the concerned subject. It will therefore stand better chance of ranking high in search results.

While this theory does have many proponents - including me - what becomes difficult is how to translate it into actual practice. A commercial website has to keep an eye on generating revenues, which means that each component of its expenditure needs to match commensurate measurable return in order to justify it. Since writing content is usually not able to generate quick revenue, many companies dither to justify spending valuable resources only for writing contents - often to their peril.

How can the problem be overcome? Does adding content come cheap? Let us look at some possible scenarios.

Start a Blog

Blogs, or weblogs, made their mark more as personal diaries, but that is an old story. Today, in most cases, the flavor has firmly shifted away from simple frivolous accounts to serious entries. People have recognized that blogging is a handy tool to multiply contents steadily. No wonder, blog software is rather referred to as content management system. Nucleus CMS and Wordpress are good examples of blog application software where a blogger (or, shall I say content writer) does not need to bother with the nitty-gritty of the tool, but rather concentrate on exploring his or her literary capabilities.

The advantage with blogging is that it is possible to pack each blog-post with keywords that are relevant to website. If you don't feel constrained by the notion that you must post fresh blog-entries everyday in order to remain in reckoning, blogging can be very helpful. Post one or two entries a week, but try to give them a unique twist by thinking aloud your take on a given subject. You may not beat the usual path, but your writing must be easy to follow and contain some useful information.

But suppose you don't write yourself. In which case, why not hire a blog writer who'll do your honors as you want him to? A blog writer is relatively inexpensive, and perhaps you may need one only part-time, which is a good ploy since it will not be a big drain on your resources.

Start a Forum

A forum is another useful way to add fresh contents to your website. Forum contents are mostly short comments from participants, but what is noteworthy is that each comment has a unique tale, coming as it does from an individual member-participant. Lively forums are a great source of information, and this is the reason why every web enthusiast is likely to take active part in a number of forums of interest to him/her.

It is not uncommon to find top search results drawn from forum comments. Since forum comments are hardly optimized for search engines, yet add unique value to the topic on hand, it shows that a properly maintained forum can indeed be of great value to a website.

The downside of a forum is that you need one or two very capable administrators, who have it in them to popularize and monitor the forum. Administrators don't come cheap, which in turn means that to make your forum successful, it may prove quite costly in the short to medium term.

Source Articles

This is the cheapest and perhaps the most popular way to add contents to your website. There is no dearth of article writers, and some are really good. There are hundreds of article directories that store thousands of articles, which can be downloaded and added to your site. If you do not mind crediting article-authors through links from your site, this is undoubtedly the best solution.

What are the downsides? First, hardly any article that you source is optimized for your website. Second, since the copyright rests with the article-author, you cannot tamper an outsourced article to suit your need. And third, you must constantly look out for good articles. This is very time-consuming. Why? Because there are so many articles coming out every minute (like this one), that it is a daunting task to sift through them and pick the right choice. And do it every other day. I know as I'm in it for a long time.

Hire Content Writer

This brings me to the last option for adding contents. If you want to have relevant content for your website, something that is unique and owned by you, the only viable option is to hire competent content writer. What are the advantages?

First, you'll have and continue to have keyword-rich contents for your website. Second, since you are paying for the contents, you own exclusive rights over them, no questions asked. Third, you are completely freed from bothering about adding contents yourself. Instead, you are able to concentrate on your core business. Fourth, content writers are not expensive when compared to paying for in-house expertise. A typical expert writer is expected to charge about 20 to 25 cents per word for medium-sized articles (600 words thereabout). For long-term contracts stretching over 3 to 6 months, it is usually possible to negotiate lesser price.

Thus, in terms of cost involved, while free articles will be the cheapest, the next ones will be blog writer, content writer and forum administrator.

Conclusion

While it goes without saying that content - and lots of it - is increasingly becoming the lifeline of any website, many website owners haven't felt it important to work out long-term strategy to meet its necessity. For many, it's a constant shuttling from one option to another, not quite justifying why one is better than the other. If there is no valid reason, then to postpone a decision on content addition is a bad decision itself. The early website owners wake up to this stark reality, the better it is for their websites' future. For, if not today, tomorrow it must be for you to decide how can you add content to your website.
