Prysmian Group Brings Ultra-Broadband to Wikimania 2016

Wikipedia annual conference in Italy uses RetractaNetxs system

Milan, June 24th, 2016 - Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has deployed a fibre optic network able to bring ultra-broadband connection to the 2016 edition of Wikimania, the annual conference celebrating Wikipedia and its sister free knowledge projects. Hundreds of volunteer editors came together in the town of Esine Lario, on Lake Como to learn about and discuss projects, approaches and issues through a series of conferences, meet-ups, training sessions and a hackathon.

Prysmian Group – through its Italian branch – acted as technological partner to this initiative, providing the complete fibre optic network to the Municipality through its RetractaNetxs system. RetractaNetxs is a solution that employs specially manufactured retractable direct buried cable filled with small fibre modules. These modules are designed to be cut at one point in the network and retracted to another where they can be fed or blown through microducts directly into customer premises. The system is extremely fast and easy to install, and in Esino Lario the cable has been installed using the existing public infrastructure, like the public administration network, with optical fibre being brought into schools, museums and the town hall amongst others.

“We are proud to have taken part to this important project and to have contributed to the success of this event, allowing hundreds of participants to enjoy ultra-broadband connection while taking part in the conference”, said Carlo Scarlata, CCO at Prysmian Italia. “This job is a very important experience for Prysmian which can be replicated elsewhere in Italy where diffused fibre optic networks are needed. Flexibility and ease of installation and use make this system the perfect solution to deploy an optical access network where non-specialised labour is available”.
