Summit Tech Launches IMS 360° Virtual Reality RCS Calling at MWC
« Posted: February 22, 2016, 10:16:30 AM »

3D experience the sights and sounds of New York, Paris and Montreal – from GSMA’s Innovation City

Mobile World Congress – February 22, 2016 Summit Tech is launching IMS 360 degree video calling with Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR headsets at Mobile World Congress 2016. As part of the demonstration, visitors will be able to communicate and experience live the sights and sounds of New York, Paris and Montreal from Summit Tech’s stand at the GSMA’s Innovation City - via a VR headset. Users can also experience enhanced Mixed Reality communication services through motion controlled 3D interfaces - giving new meaning to telepresence.

The 360° video calls are streamed directly with HD GoPro 360° camera rigs and Ricoh Theta S cameras. To demonstrate flexibility, the streams can be delivered via fixed-line or full battery powered LTE mobile units. These can be placed virtually anywhere in the world.

This innovative form of communication allows people to explore places through geo-location searches based on RCS location share and have an immersive 360° experience of the place they are calling. Users can experience virtual 3D environments such as conference rooms, movie theatres and concert halls. Users can also share their unforgettable experiences through RCS Video Share by inviting friends available via off-the-shelf ViLTE enabled smartphones — no app required, other VR headsets or a WebRTC enabled browser.

The solution can connect the 360 degree calls via Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Video over LTE (ViLTE). It supports existing industry standards and carrier IMS networks supporting IR.94. Summit Tech recently added support for VR Social Presence, NAB and Enriched Calling. In addition to connecting with VR headsets and IMS smartphones, the 360° video calls can also be streamed as an RCS Video Share session to regular Android, iOS and Windows phones.

Alido Di Giovanni, President of Summit Tech commented: “We want to empower mobile operators to rapidly launch VR services and secure new revenue streams. So, we are also introducing a white-label IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) cloud service at Mobile World Congress. There are a number of VR headsets due for launch in 2016. And operators need to be able to monetize this.”

Alido Di Giovanni concluded: “In a market which has become resigned to innovation coming from OTT players, we have come up with a whole new way for wireless operators to re-take the initiative. Service providers can better leverage their IMS deployments and provide something that can truly excite consumers again, beyond just getting faster Internet or cheaper data packages. This is one of the many ways they can begin to amaze their subscribers. Moonshots should be for everyone! ”
