HGI Sets 2015 Connected Home Agenda at 10th Anniversary Symposium
« Posted: December 11, 2014, 02:50:46 PM »

Major technology fora have come together to discuss the current state of the industry alongside HGI’s work being showcased by service providers

11 December 2014 HGI, the leading global organisation for publishing requirements for the Connected Home, has brought together the world’s leading technology innovators at a special 10th anniversary symposium in Paris.

The not-for-profit group, which features some of the world’s largest telecoms service providers, Home Gateway, chip and software developers, hosted the event to celebrate a decade of accomplishments in the connected home and to highlight its goals for 2015.

The speaker line-up included ETSI Smart M2M, Wi-Fi Alliance, ULE Alliance, Eclipse, Open Interconnect Consortium, OSGi Alliance, AGORA, Smart Building Alliance, Smart Electric Lyon and OneM2M, alongside HGI members, on topics ranging from Smart Home services, open source software and reference platforms, to hot topics in Home Gateways.

There were demonstrations of how HGI results are being used in products and prototypes from multiple broadband and smart home service providers. The event featured Smart Home demonstrations from Bouygues, Deutsche Telekom, NTT, Orange, Telecom Italia and Telekom Austria.

“On HGI’s 10th anniversary, we wanted to celebrate by holding a symposium looking to the future of digital home services and the Home Gateway,” said Duncan Bees, HGI’s Chief Technology and Business officer. “In these two days we have summarised many of the most important topics – not only in the Smart Home, but for new directions in Home Gateways. Linking the technical presentations to demonstrations by some of the world’s major broadband service providers, of how HGI work has turned into reality, reinforces HGI’s position at the fore of critical issues for the ecosystem. ”

During the symposium HGI discussed key work streams for 2015, including Home Gateway security and hybrid access gateways, gateway processor virtualisation and Wi-Fi requirements in the home. The group will also continue to dedicate significant resources to the Smart Home abstraction layer, device modelling, and requirements for software modularity.

“As one of the founding members, we started out in 2004 by helping to define a triple-play capable Home Gateway as part of our contribution to HGI. Even though it is hard to imagine now, this was a very advanced and forward-thinking concept at the time. We have come a long way since then and I think Paris has really demonstrated our achievements whilst looking ahead to our next challenges,” said Luca Giacomello of Telecom Italia and Chairman of HGI.

The two-day event was attended by more than 100 guests and members from around the world and was a huge success with the venue at full capacity. For more information about HGI visit http://www.homegatewayinitiative.org/.
