Zürich, Thursday 19 January 2012 – CloudSigma, the international, pure-play cloud server and virtual data center provider, today launched the latest version of FreeBSD in its cloud. The new FreeBSD 9.0 server image can be instantly deployed to create high performance cloud servers.

Patrick Baillie, CEO commented 'As a public cloud provider we pride ourselves on offering the latest operating system releases via our public library of instantly deployable images. FreeBSD is a popular distribution and we have a loyal following of FreeBSD users especially as we are one of the few public clouds that natively supports FreeBSD without modification. We are very pleased to offer version 9.0 with a 7 day free trial is an ideal opportunity for new customers to discover as well what the latest version has to offer.'

VirtIO: Boosting Cloud Storage & Networking Performance
VirtIO offers network and disk device drivers that are virtualisation aware and cooperate with the hypervisor. The result is that cloud servers can achieve high performance network and disk operations. VirtIO gives most of the performance benefits of paravirtualisation.

FreeBSD 9.0 fully supports VirtIO enabling users to benefit from significantly increased performance levels for cloud servers running version 9.0 with VirtIO enabled.

Patrick Baillie continued 'Unlike other public cloud platforms, we are committed to giving our customers the maximum level of control and flexibility over their cloud infrastructure. Our open software and networking layers enable customers to immediately benefit from the latest innovation. Our support for different network and storage virtualisation options allows our customers to build highly tailored infrastructure that out-performs other cloud alternatives. FreeBSD with VirtIO in our cloud is an excellent example of the direct benefits that our approach conveys to our customers.'

Powerful management tools
CloudSigma concentrates on giving users control of their infrastructure but also handing customers the tools they need to manage their cloud servers that much more easily. That means full API control as well as a full featured web management interface that includes powerful tools to tweak security and access settings as well as performance and computing variables.

Patrick Baillie concluded 'Our platform delivers a level of control akin to traditional dedicated hardware solutions but combines this with all the flexibility, scalability and transparency that Infrastructure-as-a-Service can offer. FreeBSD 9.0 with VirtIO offers performance levels matching or exceeding those achievable with dedicated hardware.'
