Working at Home: An Increasingly Attractive, Lucrative, and Realistic Option

For many parents who desire to stay at home to raise their children, as well as entrepreneurial spirits still willing to chase the American Dream, home-based businesses offer a seemingly unique solution. Recent findings suggest that home-based work is a booming trend, as more and more home-based business owners are finding success in this enviable arena.
In June of 2006, Kent Hoover, Washington Bureau Chief for the Sacramento Business Journal, reported that “New research from the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy shows that home-based businesses generate more than $100 billion in revenue a year, and possibly (up to) as much as $500 billion.”
The lure of it may seem too good to be true: be your own boss, set your own hours, little overhead cost, and tremendous earning potential. However, those in search of an easy, quick buck should take notice that the individuals responsible for these large, at home reported revenues are typically driven and pioneering, not afraid to take a risk or carve their own path. Yet with the expansion of this market, more substantial opportunities continually arise for the taking.
The Internet’s omnipresence and global reach is largely responsible for this shift in stay-at-home entrepreneurs as commerce can take place 24/7 anywhere in the world. Among these net businesses, technology is being employed to automate systems that would impress the Suits working out of offices for Fortune 500 companies. And while automated systems are busy pitching, presenting, and following up with potential customers, our savvy home business person is able to focus on improving specialized and critical skills, such as marketing, to further grow their business.
But opportunity-seeker beware, all that glitters online is not necessarily gold. A challenge for those looking to become part of this trend is finding the right, legitimate opportunity. Less than honest emails and annoying pop-up banner advertisements promising Internet riches are almost as commonplace in cyberspace as Viagra spam. Serious lookers must practice due diligence in examining opportunities thoroughly before investing hard-earned money. In addition to research, networking with someone who’s already made a mark in the home-business industry may be wise.
Despite the word of necessary caution, working from home is, now more than ever, a viable and exciting option that many are considering when looking to change both their financial situation as well as their lifestyle.
