Everything we do has some sort of guide, whether it is article writing, clothes washing or bicycle assembly. Some of what we do has become so ingrained that we no longer need the guide (or, rather, the guide is ingrained in our thought processes.) A good article writing guide can help the writer stay focused, organized and on topic.
The following is a basic article writing guide.
Any article has a layout. Good articles begin with introductory material and then follow a clear and organized structure to convey their information. Non-fiction articles and essays commonly include appendices and bibliographies at the end.
The first subject in this article writing guide deals with introductory materials. A lead section is the first part of the article, prior to any subheadings. It should be only two or three paragraphs. The first section concisely defines the article topic. It generally begins with a statement or a premise...
"The dry desert climate provides relief to emphysema sufferers."
The rest of the lead section generalizes the points to be made throughout. "In this article we'll show you why folks of every age group, who moved to various Arizona and New Mexico communities benefited by expanded lung capacity and fewer trips to the hospital.
If we teach you nothing else in this article writing guide, learn to be write short paragraphs that each focus on only one point. You can write an occasional one-sentence paragraph as long as it's a dynamic sentence. "85 percent of people who relocated to Arizona because of emphysema cut their medical visits in half." That's a good one sentence paragraph. Don't do this too often, though. The reader will get a very choppy feeling from this.
Graphics and subheadings are great eye catchers and your good writing skills must include an eye for layout - where the thoughts break and subheadings would occur naturally and where clip art, charts or other graphics could convey a message succinctly and well. Good writing skills are about creativity and artistry as well as great spelling and solid grammar and punctuation capabilities.
Nonfiction article or essay writing requires good footnote and appendix writing skills. You need to know where, how and when to include an appendix, a footnote, hyperlinks, references and a bibliography. You'll want to keep an article writing guide by your side that tells you the format for all of these.
