While in some ways article writing is the same all over, there are some do's and don'ts particular to article writing for the Internet. Here are a few tips to help you do some Web article writing. Once you become proficient and prolific, then why not consider writing as a business. There is a huge demand for competent writers.
In contrast to print journalism, where your article would start out by telling who, what, when, where, why and how, the first paragraph for the Web article you are writing generally states a problem, and then goes on to explain how the Web article will solve the problem.
Article writing organization for the Web requires that you start out by noting the points you are going to cover. Many times you will number these points, even in the heading or first paragraph - "Five things you can do to lose weight;" - "10 ways to save money at the grocery store;" etc.
Writing articles for the Internet should be assumed to be writing for a simpler, sometimes younger audience. Writing in general requires talking to those folks who have a 10th grade education. When writing for the Web you might assume 8th grade. Make it simple, and if you must introduce new terminology or acronyms clearly explain each.
Articles paragraphs written for the Web should be short - no more than five sentences. Sentences should be simply constructed, with little convolution.
There is nothing more boring than article writing that talks in generalizations throughout. Bring your points to life with personal anecdotes and examples. Include resources as well. If you are telling your readers about the benefits and features of the new cell phone for seniors, give them the Web address where they can get more information or order online.
One very important point you must not look when writing an article for the Web or any other publication. Let someone else, whose opinion you trust, read your article and give you feedback on its clarity, its persuasiveness and its organization of thought. Let them eyeball it for typos, spelling and grammar skills as well.
No matter how good, polished and experienced a writer you are - even if you are an editor - looking at your same document over and over and over is not nearly as effective as one new fresh set of eyes looking at it for the first time. That's why even psychiatrists have therapists.
