3G is short for third-generation technology and it is usually used in the context of mobile phones. The services associated with 3G provide the ability to transfer both voice data and non-voice data, such as downloading information, exchanging email, and instant messaging.
Sometimes people also talk about UMTS when they mean 3G. UMTS is short for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System and is one of the third-generation (3G) phone technologies. Other 3G technologies are CDMA 2000, TD-SCDMA and Wideband CDMA.
Simply put, 3G is the third generation of mobile telecommunications technology that offers vastly increased bandwidth and thus a wider and better range of services. In marketing 3G services, video telephony has often been used as the flag-ship killer application for 3G.
The first country which introduced 3G on was Japan and in 2005 about 40 percent of subscribers use 3G networks only. The 3G introduction in Japan shows that video telephony is not a killer application for 3G networks - at least not in Japan. Downloading music and 3G Audio ringtones has been the most popular 3G service in Japan.
What does 3G cost for me? That depends on country and service, but usually you pay for transferred data or have a fixed monthly contract.
