Unified Messaging Service
« Posted: October 07, 2007, 04:11:25 PM »

Unified messaging is the buzzword now for a company executive. Using this service, an executive can attend business calls, receive fax and emails, and even forward these messages to others persons. Unified messaging, as the name suggests, unifies a host of services into a single source or interface. These services include telephone, fax, email, and voice mails. Apart from consolidating these services, unified messaging offers a host of advanced features which are rarely found in a conventional PBX system.

Unified messaging comes in handy for the typical business executive. He can use his phone to gather information and make business transactions. He can deal in the stock market, order items, and check emails, all through a single interface. Under the unified messaging system, the phone and the PC have taken the form of transaction terminals.

One of the best features of a unified messaging service is the usage of a single number for a single person. In this system, a number is associated with a person, and not any telephone equipment. The calls to these numbers are diverted depending on the current location of the person. The person can associate his extension number with the telephone number of his current location, which may be at office, home, or a cell phone. There is even an option of converting the calls to voice mails, which can be checked at a later time. Missed call alerts are sent through pager or emails.

Similar to the phone calls, the faxes can also be received via email. This allows the fax to be viewed without requiring any fax machines. Fax messages can thus be received independent of the recipient's current location.

Providers of unified messaging service allow their clients to customize the system as per their requirements. The settings can be changed using phone, fax, or the Internet, as and when required. The clients can check their reports of their incoming and outgoing calls via the Internet on a real time basis.
