Self-optimizing network pioneer Reverb Networks has filed a patent application for a new capacity and coverage optimization (CCO) algorithm that significantly improves the impact of SON handling of coverage holes.

Reverb’s new CCO solution is based on the latest 3GPP self-optimizing network recommendations. The new solution provides for radically improved coverage hole detection and resolution, as well as inherent coordination between the CCO feature and other core SON features.

One of the key inventions is a new method called Optimization Mode Transfer (OMT), a unique feature that uses both tilt and power settings in combination, switching between them dynamically to remove coverage holes.

The new technology also offers automatic switching between cell or sector optimization modes, offering a more coordinated and complete approach to adjustments in the balance between coverage and capacity.

A new approach to Interference Management (IM) also reduces interference with neighbor cells by continuously re-selecting the candidates to be used in the coverage optimization process.

“This is a huge step forward in the core functionality of a SON system, allowing inherent coordination between what were historically independent SON functions,” said Zoran Kehler, Reverb Networks CEO. “By re-thinking the way in which we look at the fundamental self-optimization actions, we have developed a much more effective and efficient approach that creates inherently better results in the live network.”
