Online college courses are becoming more popular, but educators say incoming freshmen might want to steer away from them at first. Freshmen in distance learning classes are twice as likely to receive a D or F or withdraw than freshmen in traditional face-to-face classes, according to research at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Older students in online courses, meanwhile, fared much better than freshmen, the study discovered. "Freshmen really stood out," said Mark Urtel, an assistant professor at IUPUI. "People say younger students are the ones who grasp technology, use it most and know it the best, but it's my opinion that they grasp the technology and use it on their terms, not necessarily ours."
