With Crane High School 10th grader Demeris Campbell looking on, Trevon Hines, 13, shouted in surprise, nearly jumping out of his seat as the robot she helped build suddenly rolled to life. Trevon and about 19 other Crown Community Academy students were piecing together plastic robots in an activity room at the elementary school, under the watchful eyes of Campbell and Emily Naquin, 14, another Crane High School 10th grader.
