While critics have said giving laptops to students is expensive and distracting, experts said that Maine is the trendsetter in terms of introducing the technology into the classroom. Cindy Sargent has been teaching seventh grade at Yarmouth's Frank Harrison Middle School for 15 years. Five years ago, the Maine Learning Technology Initiaive brought $41 million worth of laptop computers to middle schools across the state. "You've always had students that perform at a high level, but everybody performs at a higher level now. That's the difference," Sargent told News 8.
