But more than a decade later - as illegal music downloads, cheating plus instant messaging clogged school and college networks - some educators are taking a hard look at the academic opportunities and pitfalls of computers in the classroom. Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that several districts across the country were dropping "one-to-one" computer programs - granting every student their own computer - because the machines were distracting students and made no contribution to academic achievement on campus.
