The Importance of Goal Setting for the Self-Employed
« Posted: November 03, 2007, 11:36:25 AM »

Goal setting is something that can be easily overlooked when it comes to running your own business. You can become distracted by day to day tasks and have little time for thinking about the future of your business. Most business owners, no matter how large or small their business is, seek growth. Without growth your business can sink quickly and make it difficult to recover.

That is why goal setting is key and needs to be part of your daily, weekly, or monthly routine. You can set personal goals that you feel you need to attain to help grow your business, or you can brainstorm with employees, family members, or anyone willing to help. What makes goal setting work is because you constantly have something to work towards that you know will add benefit to your business once achieved.

Once you have come up with specific goals, write them in a place in which you can refer back to often. A goal book or index cards are great and are compact enough to carry with you. If you are more tech savvy, you can always type up your goals using your favorite text editor and keep the document on your computer desktop for easy access.

If you have a long list of goals - don't worry, that is great! However, it is possible to become overwhelmed with your goal setting by feeling pressured to achieve them all at the same time. Prioritize your list and then tackle them one at a time. Do something everyday to reach the goal you've chosen to complete first. Even if it is only 1 - 2 things per day, you are constantly working closer towards completing it.

It helps to organize your goals into categories. For instance, for personal goals you may have a list such as:

    * Delegate daily tasks to others to free up time to seek out new clients
    * Attend more seminars and develop better networking skills

An overall business goals list may begin like this:

    * Research new accounting software to replace current one
    * Increase monthly sales

You can make your list as simple or as organized as you see fit. The key is to view your goals as often as possible and work on them! Remember to have fun with achieving your goals. Eventually you will begin to see progress and your business will begin to reap the benefits.
