Since early childhood we are told to be disciplined and organised in whatever we do for a successful and prosperous life ahead. Those who are not organised and not systematic in their work are often reprimanded. Some people even go on to say that military life is the best life, as it's routine-driven, and as it makes people respect the value of one's and other's time. Columns and books after books have been written on the issue that teaches one to be fully organised in life. Interestingly, such books do roaring business also, and writers and publishers of such books laugh their way to their respective banks.
Why we tend to lap everything that's thrown at us, which promises a bright and successful future for us? Is it because we all want to be successful in our lives, and reach the pinnacles of our respective fields? Is it because we may not be in comfortable positions and 'pearls of wisdom' offered by such books and write-ups promise us the moon? Or is because we secretly desire to be successful role models for others, which in the actual life, we may not be? I don't know, but what I know is that regimental and too organised life may not be the key to a rosy picture ahead.
To begin with, when human beings start following a fixed routine and begin behaving in too an organised way, his creative faculties and the powers of imaginations that usually fructify in comfortable, restriction-free environments get blunted over a period of time. Strange though it may sound, creativity and brilliance sprout from the recesses of sloth-ness and clutters.
Following a rather fixed routine (much against one's wishes) also denies one the many pleasures and comforts of life, say, like remaining cuddled up in the warm rajai on chilly winter mornings, enjoying a late night movie, or just chilling out at a coffee shop with friends. Even if after one achieves something, say, after missing out these and some other finer things of life, then what's the big deal, friend?
Following a fixed routine, it is said, besides making one successful, makes a man perfect as well. True, but it also makes a man too mechanical and disoriented. For when one starts following a set routine to be perfect and the best, he normally just goes through the motions, and going through the motions is not productive, and/or creatively satisfying the way it ought to be considering the time and energy one may be investing in.
In addition, even though it's true that organised people usually become successful, it's a fact of life that such people seldom reach the topmost positions in their fields. They, as a matter of fact, continue to remain at the subordinate, or at the best, middle levels. The world abounds with such people who may be somewhat successful but who usually are not brilliant and the best in their fields.
Take the case of any highly successful person or a genius! Most of them were not organised and mechanical in their lives. But they still reached the pinnacles of their respective careers, and came out with astonishing products and services that have dazzled the world no end.
I, for instance, personally know a person who seldom stuck to a fixed routine while we prepared for our board exams. Despite the fact that others religiously got up early in the morning at five and studied, he slept till nine or nine-thirty. Worse, while we almost stopped watching films, as we feared it would eat up our valuable time, he just a day before the important first paper of the boards, went for a movie. Still, he topped in the exams much to the surprise of all. There are many other similar examples that defy the conventional wisdom that one must follow a rigorous schedule for the best possible results in various fields.
This is not to suggest that one must become disorganised, and sloth all the time. But over sticking to iron-jacketed routines, may not provide the results that they might otherwise promise. So why not take life on a leisurely way? Take life as it comes. Move smoothly with the tide, and let the flowers of creativity sprout in a natural way. Trust me; you would be more content and more successful in life than those who might stick to regimental routines to supposedly shine in life! Isn't it a truth of life that the flowers that grow in the jungles, wild bushes and shrubs, in an unhurried and untidy way, turn out to the best and the most fragrant? Think over it!
