Home science graduates learn all the skills related to home management and develop professional skills for a wide spectrum of jobs related to dress making, house keeping, cooking and preservation, child rearing, education and research. Home science graduates may opt to specialize in any of the specific areas pursued at the undergraduate level e.g. Dietatics and nutrition, child development or even textile designing.
Jobs in Food Industry
NUTRITIONISTS AND DIETITIONS deal with the practical means by which we can use information on diet and energy needs to improve our general health and well being. Nutritionists counsel individuals and groups, organize and supervise food service systems in hospitals, hotels, school, community centers, and prisons. Nutritionists could be dietician, food technologists or home economists.
ADMINISTRATIVE DIETICIANS are involved in large scale meal planning and supervision of preparation process in canteens, schools etc.
CLINICAL OR THERAPEUTIC DIETICIANS work in hospitals, nursing homes or clinics. They are aware of patients nutritional needs, they develop and implement nutritional plans and evaluate results of dietary therapy.
RESEARCH DIETICIANS work in the field of nutrition in healthy food stuff as well as for therapeutic foods. They work in managing food service systems and equipments and studying body chemistry in relation to diets.
FOOD TECHNOLOGISTS apply scientific knowledge of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Engineering to the processing of food stuffs, quality control, storage, research etc. They are concerned with food processing i.e., preservation of fruits, sea food, meats, cooked foods, vegetables, juices and beverages and also the manufacture of confectionary, snacks, food stuffs and the packaging of these for marketing.
