AVIATION INDUSTRY

COMMERCIAL PILOT TRAINING
To be a commercial pilot, you are to obtain licenses for flying,
1. Student Pilot License
2. Private Pilot License
3. Commercial Pilot License

STUDENT PILOT LICENSE examination covers Air regulation, aviation meteorology, air navigation, air technical. Minimum age is 16 years and minimum qualification is X pass only.

PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE can be obtained after you get the Student Pilot License. You are subjected to initial flying training accompanied by flying instructor. After about 15 hours of dual flying, the trainee gets solo flights. A total of 60 hours flying, including minimum 20 hours solo and cross country 5 hours, is required. Here the trainee must have acquired the age of 17 years.

COMMERCIAL PILOT LICENSE is obtainable after 190 hours of more flying. Educational qualification should be XII with physics and math and age between 18 to 30 years.

HELICOPTER PILOTS are required to get CHPL, Commercial Helicopter Pilot License. The PRIVATE Helicopter pilot license can be get after 40 hours of training in flying that includes minimum of 15 hours solo flying. And 20 hours more flying training with written examinations are required to get COMMERCIAL HELICOPTERE PILOT LICENSE.

AIR CABIN CREW includes Flight supervisors, Pursers, Air Hostesses and Flight attendants. The national carriers, Air India and Indian Air Lines and most of International Airlines and some of Indian private carriers recruit graduates in the age group of 19 – 25 years, where as all others recruit XII pass candidates, in the age group of 18 – 35 years.


AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERS design, construct, test, operate and maintain the basic structure of aircrafts and spacecrafts. Aeronautical engineering can be studied after XII with physics, chemistry and mathematics.

AEROSPACE ENGINEERS generally work as a team in designing, assembling, and testing aircrafts and spacecrafts.

AIRCRAFT MECHANICS work in the maintenance of aircraft frame, engine, electrical systems and other ancillary fittings. They work as line maintenance mechanics or they also work as overhaul mechanics. They have a B.Sc. degree with 2 years practical experience or a senior secondary certificate with diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

AIRPORT STAFF include a large number of people required to direct passengers, provide information, ticket checking, issuing boarding passes, luggage and cargo documentation, passenger listing etc.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER, ATCO, looks after the movement of aircrafts on air routes and at airports during takeoff and landing.

COMMUNICATION OFFICER is incharge of general administration of communication facilities. He oversees transmission of operational messages, maintenance and update of information on all networks, national and international, on computers. He looks into traffic complaints and changes in airline schedules and timings.

COMMUNICATION ASSISTANT supervises operative duties, keep watch at positions in teleprinter exchange / distribution system at international station. He also holds charge of few minor stations. He also looks after the routine maintenance, adjustment and functional efficiency of equipment used in aeronautical communication service.

AERODROME OFFICER is incharge of air traffic control services, maintenance of aerodrome facilities, assistance to pilots for rescue operations and airport estate management.

MANAGERS take care of various departments. They are personal managers, legal managers, cargo managers, commercial managers, housekeeping managers, purchase managers and airport managers etc.

HOW TO BECOME A FLIGHT ATTENDANT

How to become a Flight Attendant ? When this question comes in your mind, check your suitability with the criteria of airlines. Go to websites of different airlines. Click their career section and check the criteria before you apply.

If you are planning to be a flight attendant, you should have a valid passport. This is most important document. Few airlines even specify in their advertisement that you need to have a valid passport (normally with minimum of one year validity).

Apply your passport in advance as it takes months to get it. Please note you may be rejected for want of a passport, may be you perform well.

Most of the airlines fly over sea. So to avoid any unforeseen happening they need flight attendants knowing swimming well. So you should be knowing the swimming. If you are comfortable enough in water and you can float will not serve the purpose. Majority of airlines take swimming test in the flight attendant interviews. So you should be confident enough that you can easily swim a few length of the pool before you mention in your resume to be a flight attendant that you know swimming.

The minimum height for a female flight attendant is 5’2” and a male flight attendant is 5’7’. The height is the one of major criteria for flight attendant jobs. Majority of the Airlines, while recruiting flight attendants, check height in the first round of flight attendant interview. Don’t mention wrong height in the resume while applying for flight attendant jobs.

The weight of a flight attendant should be in proportion to his height. While applying for flight attendant jobs do not mention wrong weight. Ultimately in the flight attendant interviews, the weight will be checked and you will loose a chance to go in flight attendant career. If you need to loose or gain your weight, start doing it now.

The eyesight of a flight attendant aspirant should be normal. Some of airlines accept corrected vision with contact lens of a flight attendant aspirant. Like swimming, to be comfortable with contact lens requires practice and time. If you are serious for flight attendant career, you should get your eye sight checked and if need is shift to contact lens.

It does not cost anything to be cheerful. But to be cheerful you need to have a charming smile. And for a charming smile white and even teeth are must. Most airlines are particular about flight attendants having a good set of teeth. If you have a crooked teeth, teeth that overlap, or gaps in your teeth, you are advised to consult your dentist now to start working on it. Getting braces and straightening your teeth is a long process. Start now.

All airlines have different age requirements. Generally airlines in India need applicants between 18 – 27 years of age. European Airlines normally make the age limit 35 years, while American Airlines do not have age limits.

That is the reason why so many training schools and institutes have emerged. Jobs in this field are specific to qualifications and bound by certain Pre-requirements. From Pilots to Ground Staff, from Air Hostesses to Cabin Crew, all these positions are waiting for the right person.

Since Aviation Industry and the Hospitality Industry work almost on the same lines, the requirements are strict and not everybody's cup of tea. Let us see what are the Requirements for a Flight Attendant in the Aviation Industry.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT CAREER REQUIREMENTS

PASSPORT

If you are planning to be a Flight Attendant, you should have a valid passport. This is most important document. Aviation industry provides a number of Flight attendant Jobs. A Flight Attendant Career gives you a big salary package. Aspiring Flight Attendants must know that they should excel in the interview because there are thousands of students in queue to become a Fight Attendant. Thus, to be ahead of others, one should get proper training from a Flight Attendant School.

To be a flight attendant one should undergo a training course in a good flight attendant school. There are number of such schools all over the world. A very large number of flight attendant schools are there in India viz. Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess Training, Air Hostess Academy, Flying Cats, ITFT etc.

Generally flight attendant school admits a candidate for one year. The course includes Communication skills, Grooming, Aviation, Computerised reservation system, Swimming, Hotel management, Food and beverages, First Aid etc. One planning to be a flight attendant must undergo training in such a school.

Aviation industry provides a number of Flight attendant Jobs. A Flight Attendant Career gives you a big salary package. With the improvement in the technology of aircraft and with the increase in passenger traffic it became necessary for airlines to start hiring Flight Attendants. Thus, the scope for this profession is visible high in near future.

Flight attendant salary is the best part of this career. Even low frill and low cost airlines pay huge pay to flight attendants. Even when you apply for the job of a flight attendant, do check the salary they are giving to flight attendants. All the international air lines give salaries in the currency of the country of their origin or in US Dollors. So if you are in a developing country like India and you are working in any famous Airline, you may get 2000 $ US per month and when you convert this currency you get huge salary in INR.

AVIATION GLOSSARY

AFT - Rear section of the aircraft

A/C - Aircraft

BOARD - Emplaning of passengers

BRIEFING - A meeting of the whole crew of a flight, sometimes including the cockpit crew to review emergency procedures and service procedures

CABIN - Passenger and Galley section of the aircraft

CHECK-IN - The time a crew member signs in at operations. Normally this is one and a half hours prior to the flight


COCKPIT - The pilot working area. It is also known as the flight deck

COCKPIT CREW - The pilot and co pilot

CREW - Both the pilots and flight attendants in the flight

CREW SCHEDULING - The department in charge of assigning flights for the crew, both the pilots and flight attendants

DELAY - An unplanned waiting of the aircraft on ground due to weather or technical snag

DEPLANE - To get off the aircraft

EMERGENCY - A problem arisen on board the aircraft e.g. fire, technical problem of the engines, a hijacker on board, or a passenger or crew that has become sick.

EMERGENCY EQUPMENTS - Equipments carried on board the aircraft for emergencies e.g. oxygen cylinder, fire extinguisher, megaphone, first aid kit, smoke hoods etc.

GALLEY - The kitchen of the aircraft which houses the ovens, coffee maker, refrigerator, meal trays and storage for food.

GROUND STAFF - Airline staff working on ground viz. Ticketing staff, customer relation staff, gate staff etc.

JUMP SEAT - A retractable seat where the flight attendants sit for take-off and landing.

LAYOVER - Free time between flights where the crew rests in a hotel

OPERATIONS - The whole department that is in charge of flight patterns for the day, crew scheduling, and where the crew checks in before and after the flight.

OVERHEAD BIN - Compartment for the storage of luggage above the passenger seat

PAX - Passenger

PRESSURIZED AIRCRAFT - Compressed air in the aircraft where the oxygen level is maintained so that the passenger and crew can breath normally.

RUNWAY - A designated area or path where the aircraft takes off and lands.

TAXI - Aircraft path or movement from the gate to the runway for takeoff, or from the runway to the bay area of the airport, where aircraft are packed.

TURBULENCE - Bad weather where the aircraft might be in a cloud, wind currents or thunderstorm.

F.A.A. - Federal Aviation Administration

C.A.A. - Civil Aviation Administration
