The Two-minute Drill: Crisis Resolution
« Posted: October 31, 2007, 03:09:27 PM »

Okay...here's the scene: you are in the middle of a crisis which requires divine intervention to avoid really, really bad consequences. Where do you turn?

A good starting point: take a few deep breaths and imagine yourself physically backing away from the problem. If it is possible in the circumstances you are experiencing, back away. If not, imagine that you are doing so. One way or the other, see the circumstance from a broader perspective.

As calmly as you can, evaluate where you are, where you want to be, and determine if there is a path connecting the "now" to the "desired".

Decision point: if you envision such a path, leap onto that path and hike to its destination at top speed.

If no such path seems apparent, drop back even further. Is this situation one you value enough to pursue? Perhaps you don't even want this job any longer, or this friendship, or this airline reservation, or...well, you get the idea. Regardless of the subject which has brought you to this crisis point, you must now determine if it is worth enduring.

Yes? Then take action. It need not be huge or dramatic, but do something. You must stop being stuck. Once you are moving, the scene immediately changes and you may well find the path to a solution.

No? It is easy now, because once you determine that you don't want to pursue a resolution, there is no crisis, only a dénouncement. In other words, explain your intent to exit, and then do so.

When you find yourself in need of divine intervention, be the divine. You have it within you to tap the deepest wisdom of the universe. By allowing yourself that option, you literally free yourself from crises both real and imagined. It is so, so simple: everything is, was, and ever will be in divine order. Know this, and you always know the way out of any crisis.

Rick Hamrick is both computer nerd and Sufi mystic. No, he doesn't understand how that came about, either.
