Karlsbad, Germany, 22nd August 2014 – From August 4 to 6, 2014, translators, interpreters, and terminologists from more than 70 countries came together for the world congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) in Berlin, Germany. Under the motto, "Man vs. Machine", the opportunities and risks of machine translation (MT) and computer-aided translation (CAT) were discussed in numerous lectures and workshops. Across Systems, manufacturer of a leading translation management system, had its own booth at the accompanying trade exhibition and participated in the lecture program.
"The FIT World Congress, which is held every three years, provides us with an ideal setting for enhancing our understanding of the requirements of the translators for a computer-aided translation system. This is a unique opportunity for personal dialog with translators from the world over", says Tanja Wendling, Head of Marketing and Lead Management at Across Systems. At the congress, 1,600 attendees were able to engage in professional exchange with colleagues and tool providers. There was also plenty of time for networking, e.g. at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the translators' federation. "After three days of exciting conversations and lectures, we had a lot to take along – what's going on in the industry, what do translators expect from a CAT tool, and where is the machine translation trend headed? Whatever the answers to these questions may be, the conference has clearly shown that although machines will change the practical work of the translator in the long run, they should be viewed as a support option, not as a threat."
The next FIT World Congress will be organized by the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators in 2017 and will be held in Brisbane, Australia.
