Skyscape Supports The Government's Greening ICT Strategy With Initiative To Offset Its Customers' ICT Carbon Emissions

London – January 29th 2015 – Skyscape Cloud Services Limited, the easy to adopt, easy to use and easy to leave cloud services company, has announced that it is the first cloud service provider to offer CarbonNeutral® cloud services. This initiative supports the Government’s Greening ICT Strategy, helping public sector customers as they strive to reduce and offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their ICT services.
Already a CarbonNeutral® company, from today Skyscape’s customers will now automatically receive a carbon offset certificate each month. This confirms that an independent greenhouse gas assessment has been conducted and the carbon emissions which have resulted from their consumption of cloud services has been reduced to net zero through verified, high-quality carbon credits, at no extra cost to the customer.
In March 2011, the Government set out its Greening Government Commitments to ensure that by 2015, significant progress had been made in creating a cost-effective and energy efficient ICT estate, reducing environmental impacts and enabling new and sustainable ways of working for the public sector.  Skyscape’s carbon offset certificates will support its customers when submitting information in response to their “Greening Government Commitments” obligations, specifically the commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent, and to engage with suppliers who can reduce the environmental impacts of the supply chain.  This carbon offset evidence is validated against two independent, third-party standards – the Verified Carbon Standard and the Clean Development Mechanism.
“The Government’s ICT Strategy set out to deliver more efficient, cost-effective and greener public services; objectives that we wholeheartedly support,” said John Godwin, Head of Compliance & Information Assurance at Skyscape Cloud Services. “We fully understand the importance of technology in facilitating energy efficiency savings.  Moving to a virtualised cloud environment can help public sector organisations to use ICT more efficiently, enabling flexible working and transforming public services, whilst also helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  What’s more, the cloud also delivers reduced costs, quicker and easier procurement, higher availability and increased levels of security.”
Godwin continued:  “We also recognise that service providers have a vital role to play in offering further support in greening public sector ICT. Our continued commitment to sustainability and our dedication to the Government’s ICT agenda is why we have developed this important initiative to help our public sector customers on their journey to a more sustainable future.”
“With greening ICT at the top of the agenda for many of our clients, given the targets set out by Government, we certainly welcome this latest initiative,” said Jen Rodvold, Principal Sustainability Consultant at Sopra Steria, a Skyscape Partner.  “We’re proud to be working with Skyscape as a likeminded organisation that is committed to addressing environmental issues and to improving sustainability within the public sector.”
“As an organisation, we are focused on delivering more efficient and user-friendly public services,” said Leigh Allen, Head of IT Services at DVLA.  “Indeed, we recently announced plans to abolish the paper counterpart to the photo card driving licence and later this year, we will launch new digital enquiry services.  As a result, Skyscape is one of our partners of choice in supporting our endeavour to improve public-facing services, whilst significantly reducing the associated carbon footprint.”
“Skyscape Cloud Services’ ongoing commitment to supporting sustainability in the IT services sector through its CarbonNeutral® company certification has taken another significant step forward with the introduction of CarbonNeutral® cloud service certification for its customers.  We see many clients looking for solutions that will enable their customers to reduce their environmental impact and Skyscape continues to be a leading example in making that possible and leading the transition to a low carbon future,” said Nathan Wimble, Commercial Director, The CarbonNeutral Company.
Skyscape’s CarbonNeutral® cloud services are provided out of data centres that comply with the EU Data Centre Code of Conduct.  Since its formation, Skyscape has worked with The CarbonNeutral Company, a world-leading provider of carbon reductions solutions, to measure and reduce Skyscape’s corporate carbon footprint to net zero.
