OnApp’s Federated Content Delivery Network (CDN) Grows to 109 Locations in Nine Months, Enables Service Providers to Offer CDN Services with Nearly Three Times the Reach of Amazon CloudFront

LONDON, UK – October 24, 2012 – Just nine months after it launched, OnApp CDN has grown to 109 locations in 35 countries, as more service providers use OnApp's cloud federation to accelerate web performance for their clients. This rapid growth shows how effective OnApp’s federated model has been at disrupting the traditional CDN market: after nine months, OnApp CDN has almost three times as many locations as Amazon CloudFront, and is comparable in size to CDNetworks.com, which has been in business for more than 12 years.

With OnApp CDN, service providers can tap into capacity from OnApp's global cloud federation to push their clients’ content and applications to any or all of the 109 locations now available. It’s an easy way for providers to create add-on CDN services, such as website acceleration and performance tools, that add real value to their existing customers. At the same time they can generate new revenue streams without the wafer-thin margins of reselling legacy CDNs from companies like Limelight and Akamai, or the expense of building their own CDN infrastructure. OnApp provides an online marketplace and broker service for hosts buying and selling CDN capacity.

“Reaching 109 locations in less than a year is a fantastic milestone, and it’s proof of something we’ve been saying for a while now: federation is the future for hosts and other service providers,” said Ditlev Bredahl, CEO of OnApp. “We designed OnApp CDN to disrupt the established CDN market, and to bring CDN in reach of all service providers and their customers. By making it easy to buy and sell capacity, and build different kinds of CDN services for end users, we’re bringing innovation back to the market.

“Through the federation, smaller providers can work together to beat market giants like Amazon and Akamai,” he said. “Federation is an incredibly disruptive, game-changing force, and federated CDN is just the beginning: and we’ll be launching new federated products and services in the not-too-distant future.”

OnApp CDN was announced in August 2011 and launched at the beginning of 2012. Since then, service providers like Dediserve and CDN77.com have used OnApp’s federated model to enter the CDN market at very low cost, create new revenue streams and bring affordable CDN services to their customers.

“We looked at numerous ways to bring CDN to our clients, including deploying our own infrastructure,” said Aidan McCarron, Managing Director of Dediserve. “In the end it was an easy decision to go with OnApp. It’s cost effective. There are Points of Presence everywhere, it’s growing daily, and it integrates smoothly with our existing systems. It made technical and financial sense.”

The analyst firm NetForecast discussed OnApp CDN during a CDN webinar held recently by The WHIR. The webinar examined the benefits of CDN for service providers and their customers, and compared the pros and cons of different approaches to CDN, including OnApp’s CDN federation.
