ECOC audience gets first glimpse of UTEL’s latest invention

ECOC audience gets first glimpse of UTEL’s latest invention which promises to cut cost of FTTH deployments

SUFFOLK, United Kingdom, and CANNES, France 22 September 2014 UTEL, a leading independent research and development company for telecommunications systems, today unveiled the new PTO 4 customer termination unit for the first time as part of ECOC 2014.
Once installed, the pre-connected unit can serve between one and four outlets and is factory terminated with cables up to the length of 60 metres, enabling service providers to carry out easier installations of quality Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) fittings. As a result, the time engineers spend at customer premises is minimised and the need for specialist tools, such as splicers, is eliminated.
Instead, engineers can simply fix the unit, which can be wall mounted or installed on a DIN rail, to the selected point and then take the reverse wound cable to the appropriate splicing point.
“With the PTO 4, engineers simply have to fix the pre-connected unit to the selected point and then take the cable, which is reverse-wound, to an appropriate splicing point,” says Kaufhold. “This is not only easier but also saves the service provider time and money by reducing installation time and complexity.”
As well as technology to ease the installation process, UTEL is also showcasing its revolutionary GPON fibre management system at ECOC. The complete fibre test and monitoring solution is based on UTEL’s world-leading Fast Light technology and can be used on all networks including point to point and GPON.
The Operational Support System (OSS) is a central office OTDR fibre test system that can reliably detect ONT reflections through 128 split PONs without expensive wavelength dependent reflectors. This measurement capability is possible because of UTEL's revolutionary Advanced Reflection Detection (ARD) technology which sets a new global benchmark for OTDR performance.
“Prior to this system engineers would be sent out to fix the fibre after a customer reported a fault but the fault often turned out to be with the subscriber’s equipment,” said Kaufhold. “Fast Light makes sure the entire network is running at optimum levels and can find faults before the customer detects them meaning fewer expert engineers are needed.”
UTEL will be available to discuss how it can help implement fibre and copper monitoring solutions at Stand 348 at ECOC 2014, in Cannes, France, from Monday, September 22 to Wednesday, September 24.
