45  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Nabto offers its “Internet of Things” Communication Platform on Cortus-based Sys on: February 25, 2015, 05:26:37 PM
Nürnberg, Germany, 25th February 2015 – Cortus, a technology leader in low-power, silicon-efficient, 32-bit processor IP, and Nabto, a Peer-to-Peer (p2p) software company, announce the availability of the uNabto communication platform on Cortus’ APS processor cores today. uNabto is a low-bandwidth Web server protocol that runs on any Cortus APS core and employs an innovative approach to bypassing firewalls and providing GUI-based Internet access to a wide range of embedded applications—using only 16 KB of Flash and less than 1 kB of RAM. uNabto running on Cortus APS cores with the Cortus Ethernet 10/100 MAC enables “Skype-like” connectivity from systems-on-chip (SoC) to browsers on mobile phones, PCs and to big data systems.

“Creating remote user access to the ‘Internet of Things’ has never been easier,” said Carsten Rhod Gregersen, CEO at Nabto. “By combining Cortus’ processor cores and Ethernet MAC with the uNabto Web server software, a simple, autonomous and highly scalable end-user experience is achieved. The Nabto platform enables the transmission and rendering of both local and remote data directly from a Cortus-based SoC to a browser on any PC or smart phone, speeding time-to-market without the complexity and cost of a high-end network solution.”

The resource-constrained nature of embedded devices was not designed for Web browsing. Using traditional Web technology, it is costly and difficult to reach an embedded SoC device located behind a firewall; not to mention serving and transmitting large graphics files while rendering HTML to a browser. Nabto enables lightweight remote access through its patent-pending fusion of HTTP and VoIP technologies. The end result is that the complexity of serving large-footprint data is moved from the SoC processor core to the remote user’s Nabto browser plug-in. This Cortus-based Nabto solution brings SoCs for “Internet of Things” one step closer, as the value gained from remote Web access now matches the cost to implement it.

“Developers of SoCs with embedded processors are looking for lightweight, silicon-efficient design solutions,” said Mr. Michael Chapman, CEO and President of Cortus, “Nabto’s lightweight p2p software with a small firmware footprint perfectly complements Cortus minimalist processor cores.” He adds, “Cortus APS cores, with low power and good code density are an excellent choice for SoCs requiring P2M or M2M connectivity with Nabto.”

Cortus licenses a range of low power, silicon efficient, 32-bit processor cores supporting a range computational performance and supporting different system complexity. The cores start from entry-level 32-bit cores suitable for upgrading 8-bit cores to cores supporting caches, co-processors and symmetric multiprocessing systems. They share the simple vectored interrupt structure, which ensures rapid, real time interrupt response, with low software overhead.

All APS processor cores interface to Cortus’ peripherals including Ethernet 10/100 MAC, USB 2.0 Device and USB 2.0 OTG via the efficient APS bus. The Ethernet MAC allows the chosen physical interface to be connected using either the Medium Independent Interface (MII) or Reduced Medium Independent Interface (RMII). Flexible memory interfaces with two independent DMA channels enable system design to ensure low CPU overhead reception and transmission without any danger of frames being lost. Address filtering enables a single interface to respond to multiple MAC addresses.

About Nabto:
Nabto (http://nabto.com) was founded in 2007 in Aarhus, Denmark by Carsten Rhod Gregersen, who saw an opportunity to connect all digital devices on the Internet in a new and simple way. He implemented this vision, and led Nabto to win the Scandinavian Industry Expo’s Invention Contest 2009 while ranking second out of 700 innovative companies in the IBM SmartCamp competition 2010. 50  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Study highlights potential $4.6 billion saving for mobile operators on: February 19, 2015, 05:03:17 PM
Cambridge, UK, 19th February 2015 - Research into future customer relationship management (CRM) trends has highlighted a potential saving of up to $4.6 billion to Western European mobile operators if streamlined ‘omni-channel’ CRM systems are implemented.

Omni-channel means delivering a consistent, accurate service to customers whether they enquire in-store, online, over the phone, via email, social media or through an operator-branded self-help app. The purchasing channels become transparent, so for example a transaction could begin online and be completed in-store as part of a continuous process.

The research, conducted by Northstream and commissioned by AsiaInfo, looked to quantify the benefits and challenges of an omni-channel approach targeted at giving operators a single customer view (SCV) across all channels and internal functions.

The research found significant OPEX savings in customer service by avoiding duplication of work as well as the simplification of renewals and new customer acquisitions. Further savings were found to result from greater efficiency in marketing, sales and IT operations.

The detailed report has a particular focus on the impact of social media, recognizing its widespread use by both businesses and consumers as a simple means of interaction. The study found, however, that social media is often inefficient for customer care functions because the high volume of queries generated are typically being handled manually and not being automatically fulfilled and integrated into customer profiles.. The result is that operators do not maximize the potential benefits of social media engagement. Omni-channel CRM is able to rectify this inefficiency and provide increased value to both consumers and operators.

Northstream’s research approach involved a series of case studies and expert interviews covering the telecom industry, as well as the retail and finance industries. The most common identified challenge is in how to implement the transformation. This was a particular issue for those businesses with disparate systems, derived over the years from mergers and acquisitions, or those with critical legacy systems, products and services that have been patched and protected rather than renewed and replaced.

The interviewed operators recognize that the current multi-channel approach to CRM is not only incomplete but contributes to a deteriorating customer experience. As the customer moves across the channels, the dialogue with the operator or service provider is too often discontinued.

“Ironically, we found that knowledge about customers at the service provider end is becoming more and more incomplete as the different channels are not sharing their respective customer data. For instance, a customer’s online/self-service transactions or dialogue with a call center are often not visible to staff at the stores. One of the key benefits of multi-channels to service providers should be improved customer understanding and information, delivering an improved personalized experience,” said Northstream’s CEO, Bengt Nordström.

“The operators we interviewed all admitted that to improve customer satisfaction they need to improve seamless customer experience across all channels.”

Dr Andy Tiller, vice president of product marketing at AsiaInfo, said: “The research highlights that as business models have moved from single to multi-channel customer interactions, a lot of complexity and manual processes have been added. Omni-channel is the answer to reduce that complexity and provide a streamlined process to deliver better CRM and significant savings to the business. However, this can only be fully achieved through a fundamental IT transformation to next generation CRM architectures that deliver the necessary flexibility.”

The availability of the new port will facilitate development of projects using our proven and reliable RTOS kernels."

Micrium’s uC/OS-III supports unlimited application tasks and is a highly portable, ROM-able, scalable, pre-emptive, real-time, deterministic, multitasking kernel for microprocessors, microcontrollers and DSPs. Available extensions provide memory protection, greater application stability, safety, memory and time management, enabling cost-effective certification of complex systems. uC/OS-II and uC/OS-III are now bundled with Cortus' software development kit. The bundled kernel is provided for evaluation purposes only; if used to design a commercial product, a license must be obtained from Micrium.

"We are delighted to extend our relationship with Micrium through the porting of uC/OS-III to our entire family of 32-bit processor cores," said Michael Chapman, CEO and President of Cortus. "uC/OS-III, with its rich set of features and small footprint, complements Cortus' silicon-efficient IP cores. We also anticipate it will play an important role in future safety-critical applications."

Cortus cores are general purpose and have been designed into a wide range of applications including smart cards, sensor controllers, wireless chips, video processing chips and touch-screen controllers for smartphones. Its 32-bit cores have very low gate counts, which keeps the silicon area down, reduces power consumption and offers a good starting point for security and IoT solutions.

Both companies will be exhibiting at Embedded World in Nuremberg, Germany from February 24 - 26, 2015. Micrium will be showcasing its reliable, high-performance RTOSes for embedded systems in Hall 4, Booth 4-350. Cortus will feature its 32-bit processor cores in Hall 5, Booth 5-478.

52  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Technology report confirms strength of start-ups in UK regions on: February 13, 2015, 04:25:09 PM
Bristol, UK, 13th February 2015 – SETsquared, Europe’s leading university business incubator, has welcomed new research showing the strength of the UK’s digital economy outside London.

The new ‘Tech Nation’ report by Tech City shows that the UK’s digital ecosystem is thriving and what’s more, it’s breaking away from its ‘London-centric’ mindset with 74 per cent of digital companies now based outside the capital.

SETsquared, a partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey, is cited in the report as one of the organisations helping to support a ‘hotbed for future technologies’.

Nick Sturge, director at SETsquared’s centre in Bristol, says the report highlights a growing trend for digital and technological innovation in regions outside the capital.

“What’s interesting about the report is that it has identified that regional clusters vary greatly in expertise and that a focus on certain capabilities by local education institutions has led to sector specialisms in certain clusters,” he says.

“This is something we have seen first-hand at our five sites across the South. Take for example Bristol and Bath, where we have high volumes of silicon, embedded, enterprise and mobile software development, data management and analytics and EdTech entrepreneurs.

"Meanwhile in Southampton, with its university excelling in health and engineering research, we have seen a trend of specialism in health technology and renewable energy. Similarly Surrey, with its university investing heavily in its 5G centre, we have an explosion of mobile technology and the Exeter centre's proximity to the MET Office means a higher proportion of climate change technologies.”

According to the report, 79 per cent of respondents Bristol & Bath say they have a network of entrepreneurs with whom they can share experience and ideas. Nick says this highlights the importance of partnerships such as SETsquared, which give digital and technology start-ups access to a huge pool of like-minded people and seasoned mentors.

He says: “The beauty of SETsquared is that it stretches across the whole of the South so entrepreneurs in Exeter, for example, can connect with peers in Surrey. This ‘wide net’ network is so important because, as the report states, each cluster has its own specialism and speaking to entrepreneurs with other specialisms can really benefit a business and help them identify new markets.”

Bristol and Bath, where SETsquared has two centres, are listed in the report as two of the areas with the highest levels of digital employment in the UK. There 61,653 are employed in the sector, coming second only to inner London where 251,590 are employed.

Nick says: “Companies based at our centres in Bristol and Bath and indeed our alumni companies there are seeing huge growth so these figures reflect what we’re seeing on the ground. The latest Bristol SETsquared member to graduate to alumni membership, after raising $12m, is planning to double its headcount as soon as it can.

SETsquared is a community supporter of TechNation and works closely with TechCity to share its 12 years of expertise in growing high tech start-ups. Since its inception SETsquared has supported over 1000 start-ups and helped them to raise over £1bn in investment. By 2025 SETsquared companies are expected to have added over £11bn to the UK GVA.

56  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Elix-IRR re-brands as Elixirr and launches innovation hubs in Silicon Valley and on: February 02, 2015, 05:48:28 PM
London, UK, 2nd February 2015 – Today, Elixirr is releasing their new brand to the market. Formally Elix-IRR, the UK’s Best New Consultancy* has re-branded as Elixirr. This move represents the next stage of growth and maturity for the firm, which turned five years old in September.

To coincide with the launch of their new brand, Elixirr is also opening Innovation Hubs in Silicon Valley and London. This is a part of their continued focus on business model disruption and digital innovation.

Elixirr’s new logo is a digital fingerprint. The icon represents:

Their personalised service – they view all of their clients as individuals

The bespoke nature of the service they offer to their clients

Their personality – the unique blend that makes them Elixirr

Focusing in on the details

The minute but significant differences that have a profound effect

Leaving their mark – unseen and subtle, but a lasting impression

Commerciality running through everything they do

The two colours in Elixirr’s logo are Granite and Gold, representative of natural strength and high value. The 'IRR' part of the wordmark is gold, as is a line running through the fingerprint. This illustrates that commercial value (IRR) is at the heart of everything that Elixirr does, for their clients and for their firm.

Stephen Newton, Managing Partner, Elixirr said:
“The fingerprint icon really reinforces who we are and what we are trying to create – a different type of consultancy. Challenging ineffective convention is what we will always do. We’re a firm of entrepreneurs, a culture of thinkers and makers, and we’re driven by a relentless desire to deliver better and better solutions for our clients. Our Innovation Hubs are just one way that we are delivering on this promise and we are incredibly excited about this next step in the growth of our firm.”

Through their new Innovation Hubs, Elixirr will be working alongside leading entrepreneurs, venture capital firms and start-ups, as well as the research labs of the established tech giants. This adds to their ability to bring strategic insights and practical approaches for transforming business models and creating operational advantage for their clients.

Elixirr believe that large corporations can learn a lot by understanding how start-ups think and work, and that start-ups can benefit from the experience and networks that corporations can offer. As a firm that is young and entrepreneurial with experience supporting both communities, Elixirr believe they are perfectly placed to help bridge this gap and create value for start-ups and their corporate clients.
