Details of Microsoft's Web Analytics Tool Leaked

Details of a new Microsoft Web analytics tool, including when the beta version will be released and how the company will get its demographic data, have leaked onto the Internet.Microsoft plans to release a beta version of its Web analytics tool called "Gatineau" this summer, said Ian Thomas, who works in Microsoft's Digital Advertising Solutions Group and is in charge of bringing Gatineau to market. The tool, which is aimed at taking on Google's Analytics product, will allow users to segment Web traffic by both age and gender, Thomas wrote on his blog Sunday. Microsoft will get the demographic data from users' Live ID profiles."I would stress that we get this information anonymously, and there is no use of personally identifiable information, such as name or e-mail address in the product," he wrote. Vista use grows as Mac OS X stays flat

Contrary to belief Vista is actually doing better than some predicted. I don't think it deserves its nickname by some self proclaimed journalists as Windows ME 2 just yet. In all fairness to Microsoft, remember when XP needed significant security updates to bring it up to standards already common when it was released? Microsoft eventually delivered. - SteveWindows Vista's share of online users has increased every month this year, while rival Mac OS X -- to which Vista has often been compared -- has shown little, if any, growth, a metrics company reports.According to Net Applications, in June Windows Vista accounted for 4.52% of all systems that browsed the Web, up from January's 0.18%. Vista has grown its usage share each month since its release to consumers Jan. 30, hitting 0.93% in February, 2.04% in March, 3.02% in April and 3.74% in May. Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X, meanwhile, accounted for 6.22% in January and hit its high point of 6.46% in May, but it slipped back to 6% in June.If Vista's uptake trend continues, it should pass Mac OS X in Web usage share by the end of August. Mozilla admits Firefox is flawed just like IE

In a public mea culpa, Mozilla Corp.'s chief security officer acknowledged today that Firefox includes the same flaw that the company called a "critical vulnerability" in Internet Explorer during a two-week ruckus over responsibility for a Windows zero-day bug."Over the weekend, we learned about a new scenario that identifies ways that Firefox could also be used as the entry point," said Window Snyder of Mozilla. "While browsing with Firefox, a specially crafted URL could potentially be used to send bad data to another application. "We thought this was just a problem with IE," Synder continued. "It turns out, it is a problem with Firefox as well."The argument over responsibility for a flaw that involved both IE and Firefox began two weeks ago, when Danish researcher Thor Larholm argued that IE contained an input validation bug that lets it pass potentially malicious URLs to other applications. Larholm called out Firefox's "firefoxurl://" protocol as one that IE mishandled. He staked out the position that IE was to blame, while other security experts said it was Firefox's fault. '$100 laptop' production begins

Five years after the concept was first proposed, the so-called $100 laptop is poised to go into mass production. Hardware suppliers have been given the green light to ramp-up production of all of the components needed to build millions of the low-cost machines. Previously, the organisation behind the scheme said that it required orders for 3m laptops to make production viable. The first machines should be ready to put into the hands of children in developing countries in October 2007. "There's still some software to write, but this is a big step for us," Walter Bender, head of software development at One Laptop per Child (OLPC), told the BBC News website. The organisation has not said which countries have bought the first machines. View: Full story News source: BBC News Read full story...

Microsoft to Protect Consumer Privacy

Microsoft will start erasing data from web searches after 18 months, unless it receives consent to store it longer. Microsoft is calling on the rest of the Internet industry to support it, with a common set of privacy practices. This week Yahoo will lay out its own plans for a similar policy for making search data anonymous within 13 months of receiving it.These follow privacy regulations announced last month by Google, the leading Internet search provider. Privacy groups say they are especially concerned by Google's ability to match search data with information collected from other services like email, instant messaging and maps. Apparently Microsoft Windows XP Is Far From Dead

At the latest budget meeting they "fine tuned the Vista/XP mix". This means that they are expecting to make more money off of the ostracized OS than they had first predicted. Initial expectations were of an 85/15 split between Vista and XP respectively. The new numbers reflect a noticeably higher number, 78/22.Here's to hoping that Microsoft realizes they have a pretty good OS already, and that all the eye-candy isn't a good enough trade off for the usability of XP. Maybe they will change their mind about the XP retailer sales cut-off date that is quickly approaching.I for one will cling dearly to my precious copies of Windows XP, I may begin venturing out and exploring other operating systems, but a lot is going to have to change before I switch to Vista. 15 Years of the SMS

The mobile phone industry is today celebrating the 15th birthday of the Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), the principal application behind text messaging first brought to market by Acision in 1992. The first ever SMSC was introduced as a product designed primarily to deal with the demands and improve reliability of a developing mobile industry, and in that year the first of many deals was signed with Telenor.Acision says that it has evolved the SMSC infrastructure from a basic 'SMSC box' to a complete next generation, IP-based SMS architecture, centred on Acision's IP SMSC. This enables text management, a wide range of differentiating service scenarios and a single rack capacity of 16,000 messages per second that can grow to virtually unlimited levels. SMSC innovation has never stopped, with current state of the art future-proof, IMS-enabled platforms that can help operators improve quality of service, reduce costs and offer exciting advanced messaging services. Its value today is as crucial to the market as ever before.Despite the rapid evolution of the mobile market, SMS is still the most important value-added service for operators. For operators looking to provide subscribers with robust messaging services, today's mix and match platform means they can specify SMS capacity to meet their requirements. Microsoft Confirms Windows Seven

Windows Seven now has an official ship target - 2010.At Microsoft's Global Exchange (MGX) annual sales conference in Orlando this week, Microsoft shared a bit more - albeit at a high level - on Windows Seven, according to a copy of a slide deck I saw that was distributed to the field sales force during the conference. Among the information shared was that Microsoft is anticipating it will take at least three years from now to get the next version of Windows client out the door.Last time anyone got Microsoft to talk dates about Windows Seven, the next big Windows client release, a Windows exec slipped up and said something about 2009.Microsoft officials told MGX attendees that the company is currently internally planning Windows Seven. So far, the company has determined Windows Seven will come in both 32- and 64-bit flavors. No word on how many SKUs or any kind of guidance on features was provided, but Microsoft did say it would address both consumer and business segments with Windows Seven. Microsoft is mulling the concept of how to extend Windows Seven with subscription-based services, according to the deck - more like Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP), which Microsoft currently offers to its Software Assurance customers, than Windows Live, however. AMD halted market share slump in Q2, says analyst

For the last six months, AMD's market share has been on the wane as arch-rival Intel regained much of the lead it lost to the smaller chip maker during 2006. But new figures show AMD's slide may have come to a halt. According to market watcher iSuppli, AMD's Q2 2007 share of the global x86 processor market rose by half a percentage point from the previous quarter to 11.4 per cent. Intel's share dropped by an identical amount to 80.3 per cent over the same timeframe. Not that Intel CEO Paul Otellini's going to lose much sleep over a half a percentage point dip when his company' lead is so huge. Equally, iSuppli admitted its numbers were preliminary - so it could well revise them shortly in Intel's favour. View: The full story News source: The Reg Read full story...

'Critical' BitTorrent flaw hits Opera

A 'highly critical' vulnerability has been found in the Opera web browser which could be exploited to remotely compromise a user's system. The flaw is caused when Opera uses already freed memory to parse BitTorrent headers, and can lead to an invalid object pointer being de-referenced. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary code if the user is tricked into clicking on a specially-crafted BitTorrent file and then removes it from the download pane by right-clicking. The vulnerability is reported in version 9.21 of Opera on Windows, but security monitoring website Secunia, which rated the flaw 'highly critical', said that other versions may also be affected. The problem can be fixed by upgrading to Opera 9.22. View: The full story News source: vnunet Read full story...
